Do You Know About Tuntong Laut (Batagur Borneoensis)?
Tuntong Laut (Batagur borneoensis) is a species of freshwater and land turtles from 29 species of turtles in Indonesia. Tuntong’s family has two species, namely the tuntong laut (Batagur borneoensis) and the tuntong sungai (Batagur affinis). In general, these species inhabit the same habitat, namely mangrove forests.
Tuntong Laut is one of the most colorful turtles (often found in male tuntong laut). The carapace of the tuntong laut is about 60 cm. They have a white or gray shell and plastron and large black spots with white and orange or red heads.
This aquatic animal is one of the endangered animals in the world. Tuntong Laut is listed as 25 critically endangered turtle species on a global scale (IUCN, 2011). In addition to habitat loss, population taking eggs for consumption and hunting for pets has led to a drastic decline in their population.
Generally, tuntong laut inhabit estuary areas up to 4 km upstream of the river which are still influenced by tides. Currently the population is mostly in Aceh, Tamiang and surrounding areas.
